Bashō was born in 1644 in the village of Ueno, Iga Province (now Mie Prefecture). He began writing poetry as a young man, and in 1672 he traveled to Edo (now Tokyo) to study haiku with the poet Kitamura Kigin. In 1680, Bashō returned to his hometown, where he lived for the next several years.

In 1684, Bashō embarked on a journey to the north of Japan. He traveled for several months, visiting famous places and meeting with other poets. In 1686, he returned to Edo, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Bashō's haiku poems are known for their simplicity, beauty, and insight. He often used everyday objects and experiences to evoke a sense of the natural world. His poems are also known for their use of the "cutting word" (kireji),which is a word or phrase that creates a pause or break in the poem.
