The Ballantyne Sinking The Angels Weep (The Ballantyne 3)

The Ship

The SS Ballantyne was a steel-hulled passenger ship built in 1874 in Glasgow, Scotland. It was 269 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 1,459. The ship was powered by a single screw propeller and could reach a speed of 10 knots.

The Ballantyne was a popular ship for travel between Canada and Europe. It was also used to transport troops during the Boer War and the First World War.

The Voyage

On December 20, 1917, The Ballantyne left Montreal bound for Halifax. The ship was carrying 36 people, including 24 crew members and 12 passengers.

The voyage was uneventful until the ship reached Cape Race, Newfoundland. On the afternoon of December 20, the ship was caught in a fierce storm. The winds were gusting up to 100 knots, and the waves were crashing over the deck.

The Sinking

The Ballantyne was battered by the storm for hours. The crew fought valiantly to keep the ship afloat, but the damage was too severe. At around 11:00 pm, the ship sank in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

There were only 7 survivors from the sinking of The Ballantyne. The survivors were able to cling to wreckage until they were rescued by a passing ship.

The Legacy

The sinking of The Ballantyne was a tragic event. The ship was lost, and 29 people lost their lives. The tragedy has been remembered as The Angels Weep.

The Angels Weep is a reminder of the dangers of the sea. It is also a reminder of the courage of the crew members who fought to save the ship and the passengers.
